The VIRGO Superattenuator and the control of the mirror

The suspension of the VIFTO detector has been designed in order to move the 'seismic wall' down to a few Hz and to implement a hierarchical control of the mirror position. The control effort is hierarchically split over 3 actuation points along the chain. A multi d.o.f. control of the SA DC position and of the SA resonances (inertial damping) is implementted, aimed to reduce the rms motion of the mirror down to ~1 micron.
Recently, a robust locking of the VIRGO test interferometer has been obtained, proving the Superattenuator to be able to control the mirror withing the requirements.
The preliminary results are presented and discussed.

Laser strainmeter in Baksan and a possibility of geophysical measurements with large scale gravitational interferometers

Some results collected by the laser strainmeter of SAI MSU in Baksan Neutrino Observatory are given for both channels of this instrument: low frequency (geophysical) and high(kilohertzs) frequency (astrophysical) ones. Then the problem of the "geophysical channel" also for large scale gravitational wave interferometers is discussed with a presentation of conceivable objectives and acheivable "signal to noise" ratio
